Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and most other Macomb County officials are facing challengers in the election this year, but four county commissioners are running unopposed for re-election.

A total of 51 people are running for the countywide and commissioner positions in Macomb County. The primary election is Aug. 6, and the general election is Nov. 5.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham speaks to the media Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, on a Shelby Township incident.

Part-time Hamtramck police officer Scott Budnick, former Warren councilman Eddie Kabacinski and former state Rep. Terence Mekoski are running in the Republican primary for Macomb County sheriff. The winner will face Wickersham, the only Democrat running, in the general election.

There will be no county prosecutor primary election. Lucido, the Republican incumbent and only GOP candidate, is set to face Wayne State University adjunct law professor Christina Hines, a Democrat, in the general election.

County Clerk Anthony Forlini faces a Republican primary challenge, while two Democrats are vying to take on the GOP primary winner in the fall.

Twelve of the 13 county commissioners are running for re-election. Only two Republican incumbents face primary challengers — District 3 Commissioner Sylvia Grot and District 9 Commissioner Barbara Zinner. All Democratic incumbents are running unopposed in the primary.

But District 11 Commissioner Mai Xiong recently won a bid for the 13th state House District, and her resignation from that seat will be effective Tuesday, according to Xiong. The County Commission is accepting applications for the vacancy and is expected to vote to appoint a replacement on May 16.

But the District 11 position will be up for election later this year. Three candidates filed to run for the seat, including former state Rep. Lisa Wojno, a Democrat.

The deadline to file for countywide offices and County Commission seats was last Tuesday.
