FCA extends deadline for Detroiters to apply for jobs at new plant

Detroit — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is giving pre-qualified Detroiters one more week of priority application access for jobs at its new assembly plant on the city’s east side.

The deadline is Sept. 29.

Last month, the automaker sent an invitation to the more than 11,000 Detroiters who completed Detroit at Work Job Readiness activities during the summer. Those Detroiters have access to apply for the jobs before non-Detroit residents.

“We decided to extend the application window to make sure that all Detroit residents who are already on the list have an additional opportunity to complete the application process,” Mike Lackaye, head of hourly staffing for FCA said in a statement. “Our intent has always been to make sure that Detroit residents are considered first, and we feel that this extension is important in achieving that objective.”

Officials have not said how many Detroiters have applied for jobs so far. 

The application window opened on Aug. 26 for Detroit residents living in the three zip codes surrounding the new plant. The application was open to all other Detroiters on Sept. 9.

Conditional offers will be made late this year with start dates by early 2020.

Fiat Chrysler is expected to bring 4,950 jobs to the city after receiving approval in May from the city and state to invest $1.6 billion in expanding its Mack Avenue facilities with a new plant, and $900 million to modernize its Jefferson North Assembly Plant for production of the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as an all-new three-row full-size Jeep SUV and plug-in hybrid models.

The new assembly plant is expected to open in late 2020.
