Nolan Out Loud: Eating at home more dangerous than dining out

The Detroit News
A federal judge again denied a Michigan restaurant association's request to immediately quash the state's ban on indoor dining. Eateries like Mootz pizzeria are limited to carryout orders now that the weather makes outdoor dining unbearable.

Are you safer at home or in a restaurant? A solid case can be made for the latter.

Most restaurants in Michigan took extreme safety precautions in the hopes of remaining open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They put in new ventilation systems and plexiglass shields and trained their staffs in place rigorous safety protocols. Social distancing and masks are mandatory.

At home? The masks come off and folks wallow all over each other. And who knows about the sanitation practices.

That may explain why the virus is spreading now largely among groups of family and friends, and not so much from indoor dining.

Still, Gov. Whitmer, citing science and statistics she won't produce, shut down indoor dining rooms, leaving restaurants who invested so much to safely reopen frustrated.

Roughly 250,000 hospitality workers will be unemployed this Christmas season. Their sacrifice will not ease the impact of the virus. See my column today.

Dogs on a plane

This is great news for air travelers like myself who don't think dogs -- or other animals -- belong on airplanes. The U.S. Transportation Dept. reversed course on so-called emotional support animals, allowing airlines to keep them off flights unless they pay the standard fare. The department rightly concluded that these dogs and other animals are basically pets, and their owners are mostly trying to get them on planes free. The proliferation of random dogs on flights has made travel uncomfortable for those who are allergic to or uncomfortable around dogs. Airlines are free now to limit cabin animals only to trained, certified service dogs.

ETC.

South Dakota's Kristi Noem, America's best governor, channeled Ronald Reagan in smacking down Joe Biden's pledge that "help is on the way."

The left keeps feasting on its own darlings. Former President Barack Obama is being pummeled for objecting to the defund police slogan.

The swinging lifestyle is obviously not conducive to social distancing. Dozens tested positive for COVID-19 after the Naughty in New Orleans swingers convention.
