Editorial: Our picks in Macomb County state House races

Macomb County voters will be asked to elect state House members in the Nov. 3 election. Here are our endorsements in those races:

18th District (St. Clair Shores, Eastpointe area): Kevin Hertel is seeking a third term as the Democratic incumbent. He's been a solid lawmaker and now has the experience to become an effective leader of his party's caucus. Republican Michael Babat did not answer our questionnaire.

22nd District (Roseville, Warren and vicinity) Roseville City Clerk Richard Steenland, a Democrat, is seeking to move to the Legislature in this open seat and gets our endorsement. Republican Steven Warner, a veteran from Warren, did not answer our questionnaire. 

24th District (Harrison Township, Clinton Township, Mount Clemens area): Republican Steve Marino is seeking a third and final House term, and should be reelected. Marino is a former county commissioner who understands the needs of his district. Michelle Woodman, an educator from Harrison Township, is the Democratic candidate. 

25th District (Sterling Heights area): Democratic incumbent Rep. Nate Shannon is seeking a second term. He's earned the right to serve another two years. Republican Paul M. Smith did not return our questionnaire.

28th District (Warren, Centerline): Lori Stone, a teacher and Democrat, is the incumbent in this district. She has brought education expertise to the Legislature and should get a second term. The Republican is Steve Colegio, a retired police officer from Warren.

30th District (Warren, Utica): Republican incumbent Diana Farrington is seeking a second term. She has a strong record of supporting schools and fixing roads and should be reelected. The Democrat is Michael Chehab, an attorney from Sterling Heights.

31st District (Clinton Township, Fraser): William Sowerby, the Democratic incumbent, is seeking a second term and should be reelected. He's a former county commissioner and Clinton Township clerk, and his experience is valuable in the Legislature. The Republican is Lisa Valerio-Nowc, a librarian also from Clinton Township.

32nd District (Chesterfield Township area): The endorsement in this race goes to Republican incumbent Rep. Pamela Hornberger, who is seeking a second term. She's an advocate for small businesses and fiscal discipline. The Democrat is Justin Boucher of Columbus Township, who describes himself as a progressive millennial. 

33rd District (Lenox Township, city of Richmond): Jeff Yaroch is the Republican incumbent in this district and is seeking a second term. The attorney is a Second Amendment advocate and a solid conservative lawmaker who should be reelected. The Democrat is Olu Jabari of Lenox Township, who did not respond to our questionnaire.

36th District (Rome, Shelby Township): This district is represented by Republican Douglas Wozniak, an attorney who focuses on Medicaid and senior issues in the Legislature. He should be given a second term. The Democrat is Robert Murphy, a longtime community volunteer in Washington Township.
