Editorial: Our choice for Congress from the 9th District

Michigan’s 9th Congressional District is extremely gerrymandered, taking in  parts of southeast Oakland County and southern Macomb County.

Democrat Andy Levin is seeking reelection, and should get the support of voters. 

He brings passion and a spirit of teamwork to Congress. He is seeking a second term. His father, Sandy Levin, previously held the seat. 

In answering The Detroit News’ questionnaire, Levin described his political ideology as “practical progressive.”  

While serving his first term in Congress, Levin has worked with the Republican from Michigan’s 4th District, John Moolenaar, to stop the deportation of Iraqi nationals. 

He has also worked alongside Republican Congressman Francis Rooney of Florida on legislation that would keep pharmaceutical companies from exploiting patients and blocking generic versions of a drug. 

Levin’s Republican opponent, Charles Langworthy, claims to be mounting a “constitution revolution” against the Marxist takeover of Washington, but Langworthy is more a caricature of a conservative candidate than a substantive challenger. 

He has no leadership experience to speak of to bring to Washington, and voters would do well to wait until a better-equipped conservative candidate rises in future elections.

Voters in Michigan’s 9th District would be better served by Andy Levin because of his knowledge of the issues and his bipartisan record in Congress.
