Reports: UM loses Frey to FSU, adds Cincy's Washington

Not surprisingly after an 8-5 season, Michigan’s football staff is in flux.

Greg Frey, who spent the last season as the Wolverines’ run-game coordinator and tackles/tight ends coach, is leaving for his alma mater, Florida State, according to a sourced report by Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports.

Frey will be the offensive line coach at FSU, per Thursday night reports.

Earlier in the day, it was widely reported Thursday that Al Washington, who spent the last season as defensive line coach at Cincinnati, will join Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

While there are different reports what position Washington will coach, a source told The News on Thursday that he will work with the outside linebackers and special teams.

The former defensive tackle at Boston College (2002-2005) coached running backs at Boston College while current Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown was defensive coordinator from 2013-2015. Washington worked with Boston College running back Andre Williams, who won the 2013 Doak Walker Award and is Boston College’s all-time leading rusher.

Washington has spent 11 years coaching in college, including five seasons as his alma mater, Boston College, where he also coached special teams and defensive line in 2016.

He is widely considered a tremendous recruiter. He left Boston College for Cincinnati in part to be closer to family — he is from Columbus.

Frey is the second departure from Harbaugh’s staff after the 2017 season. Brian Smith, who coached Michigan’s safeties, left the program before the bowl game for Rice, where he is now the defensive coordinator.
