Recap: Michigan staves off Rutgers in 3OT with 48-42 win

Game summary

After another disastrous start from first-year starting quarterback Joe Milton, Michigan rallied from a 17-0 deficit to Rutgers behind backup Cade McNamara to escape Piscataway with a 48-42 win in triple-overtime.

Michigan gets it at the 25 with 27 seconds left in a tie game.

Cade McNamara's first-down pass to Mike Sainristil falls incomplete. He completes to Zach Charbonnet on second down for a gain of 4.

Charbonnet is stopped short of the sticks, as Michigan is apparently satisfied with taking this thing to overtime.

Rutgers ties Michigan in final minute

Rutgers takes over at the 25, trailing 35-27 with 5:07 to go in the fourth.

Noah Vedral hits Bo Melton on first down for a gain of 9. Isaih Pacheco rushes for 6 yards on the next play.

Shameen Jones hauls in an 11-yard pass on the next play, going down at the Michigan 49 for a first down.

Pacheco rushes for 4 yards on first down, then gets 3 more on second down. Jones moves the chains with a 9-yard reception on third down to the Michigan 33.

Aaron Young rushes for 2 yards on first down. Vedral takes a shot down the sideline to Jones, but the ball is overthrown. The third-down throw to Jones, though, is complete for a gain of 9, and Rutgers has a first down at the Michigan 22 with 1:40 left in the game.

A false start penalty will make it first-and-15 at the Michigan 27.

Pacheco picks up 2 yards apiece on first and second down to bring up third-and-11, and Rutgers gets exactly what it needs with an 11-yard completion to Jones.

Vedral's first-down pass is dropped. Pacheco rushes for a yard on second down.

The pocket collapses around Vedral on third down, and he takes a shot to the end zone that sails out of bounds. The Scarlet Knights are down to their last chance.

It's fourth-and-9 at the Michigan 11: Vedral hits Cruickshank in the end zone to draw within a two-point conversion of tying this thing up.

Vedral carries half of Michigan's defense into the end zone on a quarterback draw, and we're all tied at 35.

Michigan extends lead on Johnson's second receiving touchdown

Michigan takes over at the 15. The Wolverines lead 28-27 with 11:17 to go in the fourth quarter.

Cade McNamara throws incomplete to Ronnie Bell on first down. He hits Bell on second down, though, and the completion is good for 14 yards to the Michigan 29.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 6 yards on first down. Nick Eubanks catches it underneath, then bruises his way to a 7-yard gain on second down.

Now McNamara goes to his other tight end, hitting Erick All for a pickup of 6. Haskins moves the chains with a 6-yard pickup on second down to the Rutgers 46.

Haskins rushes for 5 yards on the next play, then Cornelius Johnson picks up a new set of downs with a 10-yard reception.

Charbonnet picks up 2 yards on first down and 8 more on second down to move the chains yet again.

Now Michigan goes back to Haskins, and he keeps the momentum going with a 12-yard run up the middle.

Cornelius Johnson reels in a bubble screen, catches a block, dances up the sideline, and has his second touchdown of the game as Michigan extends the fourth-quarter lead.

Michigan 35, Rutgers 27 (5:07 4th)

Michigan defense stands tall after gaining lead in fourth

Rutgers takes over at the 19 with a 28-27 deficit and 13:32 left in the game.

Noah Vedral's first-down pass is broken up by Gemon Green. Kay'Ron Adams rushes for 5 yards on second down. Vedral keeps the chains moving with a 14-yard completion to Aron Cruickshank to the Rutgers 38.

Vedral is sacked by Josh Ross for a loss of 11 on the next play. He gets 8 of it back on second down, then throws a 5-yard completion to Bo Melton on third down. Rutgers will have to punt.

Michigan 28, Rutgers 27 (11:17 4th)

Michigan takes its first lead of the game in fourth quarter

Michigan takes over at its own 29. It trails Rutgers 27-21 with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. 

Cade McNamara hits Ronnie Bell for a pickup of 9 yards on first down. Zach Charbonnet picks up the first down with a 5-yard run that's supplemented by a personal foul assessed to Rutgers. 

It's first-and-10 for the Wolverines at the Rutgers 42.

McNamara rushes for a yard on first down, then hits Nick Eubanks for a pickup of 6 on second down. Blake Corum is dropped for a 2-yard loss on third down.

Will Michigan go for it on fourth-and-5 at the Rutgers 37? We'll find out in just a minute.

END 3RD: Rutgers 27, Michigan 21

Michigan does go for it in fourth down, and it's a pretty good decision. McNamara finds Chris Evans for a 21-yard completion to the Rutgers 16. 

McNamara gets popped while throwing a completed pass to Ronnie Bell that's good for 10 yards and another Michigan first down.

McNamara can't complete a first-down throw to Ben Mason, but he doesn't miss to Mike Sainristil on a slant route that goes for a touchdown.

Quinn Nordin's extra point gives Michigan its first lead of the game.

Michigan 28, Rutgers 27 (13:38 4th)

Rutgers goes three-and-out late in third quarter

Rutgers takes over at the 21. The Scarlet Knights lead 27-21 with 3:22 to go in the third.

Bo Melton drops the first-down pass. Noah Vedral throws out of bounds on second down. Shameen Jones hauls in a 6-yard pass on third down, completing the three-and-out.

Rutgers 27, Michigan 21 (1:57 3rd)

Michigan punts it away with chance to take first lead of game

Michigan takes over at its own 26. The Wolverines trail 27-21 with 5:53 to go in the third.

Cade McNamara on first down hits Erick All for a completion of 1 yard. Blake Corum rushes for 9 yards on second down, moving the chains.

Corum goes for 2 yards on the next play. A false-start penalty makes it second-and-13 at the Michigan 33. Avery Young absolutely levels All on a second-down pass attempt and forces an incompletion. Now Michigan takes a delay-of-game penalty. It's third-and-19.

Mike Sainristil only picks up 8 on third down.

Rutgers takes 6-point lead with field goal in third

Rutgers takes over at its own 25. The Scarlet Knights lead by 3 with 10:07 left in the third quarter.

Kay'Ron Adams rushes for 3 yards on first down. Noah Vedral on second down throws complete to Aaron Young for a pickup of 8.

Injury alert: Michigan S Brad Hawkins was hurt on the play and is being tended to by the training staff.

Isaih Pacheco is stopped for no gain on first down. Rutgers is flagged for holding on the next play, making it second-and-19: Vedral will scramble, evade a sack, head toward the sideline, and get out a 32-yard completion to Shameen Jones.

It's first-and-10 at the Michigan 41.

Vedral goes to Aron Cruickshank on his next two throws for completions of 9 and 5 yards, respectively. First down, Rutgers, at the Michigan 27.

Injury alert: Rutgers WR Bo Melton is hurt on the play and is being tended to by the training staff.

Aaron Young gets 2 yards on first down and another yard on second down. Melton returns, and he's the target of a third-down throw from Vedral: The pass is broken up in the end zone.

McNamara gets Michigan offense rolling in third quarter

Blake Corum returns the kickoff to Michigan's 41-yard-line. The Wolverines trail 24-14 with 13:42 in the third quarter.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 9 yards on first down, then picks up 3 on the next play to move the chains.

Cade McNamara's first pass of the half is complete, but for a loss of 2, to Giles Jackson. Cornelius Johnson can't come down with a deep throw on second down. McNamara throws into a tight window to Erick All on third down, a completion of 14 yards to the Rutgers 35.

Haskins picks up 25 yards on the next play, and Michigan has a balanced attack in a groove for the first time this game.

Rutgers answers emphatically after Michigan touchdown

Rutgers takes over at its own 25 after the Michigan touchdown.

Gemon Green gets beat badly by Bo Melton, and Noah Vedral easily drops it in over the top for a 61-yard touchdown score.

Giles Jackson returns the second-half kickoff for a Michigan touchdown. What a mammoth swing in momentum for the Wolverines.

Michigan takes over at the 17 with 1:58 to go in the second quarter. The Wolverines trail 17-7.

Cade McNamara throws a 4-yard completion to Chris Evans on first down, then moves the chains with a 6-yard throw to Nick Eubanks on second down.

McNamara goes back to Evans, this time for a gain of 3, then hits Erick All for a gain of 5 to the Michigan 36.

McNamara on first down is crushed while trying to throw the ball out of bounds, and a second-down throw to Mike Sainristil is off the mark. Blake Corum picks up 11 yards on a third-down screen before going out of bounds at the 50 with 9 seconds left.

Michigan forces huge three-and-out, gets ball back before half

Rutgers gets it at the 25. The Scarlet Knights lead 17-7 with 3:26 to go in the second quarter.

Noah Vedral kicks off the drive with a bang and a 12-yard completion to Bo Melton.

Isaih Pacheco rushes for 3 yards on first down and gets 4 more on second down. A throw to Melton on third down falls incomplete.

Michigan gets spark from backup McNamara, immediately gets on scoreboard

Michigan runs out Cade McNamara at quarterback to start the drive. The Wolverines now trail 17-0 with just over 4 minutes to go in the half.

Zach Charbonnet rushes for 3 yards on first down. Mike Sainristil hauls in a 14-yard reception on the next play.

McNamara has a wide-open Cornelius Johnson deep over the middle on first down and hits him in stride, connecting for a 46-yard touchdown.

Rutgers takes three-score lead near end of second quarter

Rutgers takes the field with a 14-0 lead and 7:37 left in the second quarter. 

A holding penalty brings up first-and-20 at the Rutgers 29.

Noah Vedral hits a 5-yard pass on first down, then throws incomplete to Paul Woods on second down. Vedral takes off up the middle for a quarterback run of 21 yards on third-and-very-long. 

Vedral hits Shameen jones on the next play for a 10-yard gain to the Michigan 35.

Rutgers loses 7 on first down after fumbling a reverse handoff, but the Scarlet Knights do fall on it. Michigan is flagged for roughing the passer on the next play, so that will help Rutgers get things back on track.

Rutgers recovered an onside kick on its original kickoff attempt, but they were flagged because of an illegal block.

Joe Milton misses to Blake Corum on first down, then underthrows to a wide-open Ronnie Bell on second down.

Haskins moves the chains with a 1-yard run to the 24 of Michigan.

Milton misses to Ronnie Bell on first down, then throws just a touch too far for Mike Sainristil on second down. He lobs a deep ball to Giles Jackson on third down, and that one's complete for a big gain of 31 yard.

It's first-and-10 at the Rutgers 45.

Milton tries another deep throw to Bell on the next play, and this one draws a defensive holding penalty. Michigan has a first down at the 35 of Rutgers, now.

Milton rushes for 2 yards on first down. Zach Charbonnet picks up 2 yards on second down. Giles Jackson can't hold onto a third-down throw, ending the drive.

Michigan slows Rutgers momentum with quick stop

Rutgers takes over at its own 27. The Scarlet Knights lead Michigan 7-0 with 2:54 to go in the opening frame.

Noah Vedral on first down hits Bo Melton for a pickup of 12. 

He then completes a 4-yard throw to Johnny Langan. Vedral on second down rushes for 2 yards, bringing up third-and-4. Vedral completes the third-down throw, but it's for no gain.

Rutgers will punt.

Michigan's offense takes over at the 28 after a return by Blake Corum. The Wolverines trail 7-0 and have coughed the ball up in Rutgers territory on each of its first two possessions.

Johnny Langan loses a yard on first down, then picks up 3 yards and 6 points on the next play with a rushing touchdown.

Rutgers is flagged for running into the kicker on fourth down. That's a 5-yard penalty but doesn't give Michigan an automatic first down, so it'll be fourth-and-1 at the Rutgers 43.

Rutgers takes over at its own 29 after recovering a fumble. It'll look to score the first points of the game, as we sit here with 11:07 left in the first quarter.

Isaih Pacheco rushes for 2 yards on first down. Shameen Jones hauls in a 9-yard reception on the next play that's good for a new set of downs at the Rutgers 40.

A holding penalty makes it first-and-20 at the 30.

Noah Vedral throws a completion to Aron Cruickshank for a 6-yard gain, and is then sacked for a loss of 7 on second down. A 9-yard completion on third down won't be enough.

Chris Evans rushes for 4 yards on first down and gets 2 on the air on second down. It's third-and-4. Joe Milton hits Cornelius Johnson for an easy first down, but Johnson is then stripped. The ball is recovered by Rutgers. Turnover.

Pregame

Michigan will try to end a three-game slide when it takes on Rutgers on Saturday night.

The Wolverines (1-3) have not won a game since their season opener at Minnesota, a stretch that includes losses to in-state rival Michigan State and their first loss to Indiana since 1987.

Likewise, the Scarlet Knights lug a three-game losing streak into Saturday night's contest, not having won since their season opener at Michigan State.
